Matthew’s Friends launches new website

Matthew’s Friends, the charity that specializes in ketogenic dietary therapies for children and adults with drug-resistant epilepsy, has launched a new website.

Matthew's Friends launches new websiteThe charity supports patients, families and professionals by providing information , training, research and grants to develop ketogenic services for those with hard-to-treat seizures and other neurological and metabolic disorders and emerging cancer types.

The ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate, protein controlled diet that switches the body’s energy source from glucose to ketones. For some people, this can help to prevent or reduce the number and severity of seizures.

Research with Epilepsy Society

Epilepsy Society has worked closely with Matthew’s Friends on a small audit of adults following the ketogenic diet or the modified Atkins diet which is also high in fats and low in carbohydrates.

The results showed that response rates in adults were similar to those in children.

  • 39 per cent of adults on ketogenic dietary therapies showed a 50 per cent or more decrease in seizure frequency
  • 60 per cent were brighter and more alert
  • 61 per cent had less severe seizures.
